Main research topics

The options for optimising the use of wood in the future are myriad. Therefore, the NRP 66 has decided to focus on six main topics that are organised in six research modules. In four of them, wood is studied as a multi-functional resource from the molecular via the submicroscopic (fibres, fibrils) through to the macroscopic scale. The other two models deal with the economic prerequisites (from material availability through to distribution) and with management of the entire wood life-cycle.

The six modules are:

  • Raw wood – supply, policies and processes of provisioning,
  • Wood as a raw material for useful chemical substances,
  • Wood as a source of energy,
  • Wood as a material for components,
  • Wood-based structures and buildings,
  • Life-cycle assessment of wood-based material flows.
